Camper (Golden Retriever) 7/15/2009 - 5/19/2022
Mort (Sonoran Desert toad)
Dugway (rabbit) injured by the dogs, 2021. Took care of it for six weeks, eventually died.
Melly (Macaw) 7/1/1999 - 2009. Lived her first year in a pet shop. We bought her, and had her for ten years. She wanted a mate, so we gave her to a bird breeder. She didn't get along with the other birds, so after three years the bird breeder sold her to a woman. The woman renamed her to "Sunny", her original name at the pet shop. The woman had her for five years, or so; then one night a burglar broke in and stole the bird, leaving a bloody mess on the floor. the bird had bit the thief. The story was in the newspaper, and that's how we learned about it. No doubt the thief sold her to a warehouse of illegal bird trafficking.
Moki Dugway 2022-09-06 Picked up from Show Low No-Kill Shelter. Shelter said Moki is 3.5 months old, born on May 19, 2022 (same date as Camper death); Springerville vet said Moki is probably closer to 5 months old, born sometime in early March.
Chickens:
- First batch, 2019-05-03:
- "Annabelle" Speckled Sussex. 2022-02-04 Attacked by a hawk. 2022-11-10 Died of natural causes.
- "Henny Penny" Speckled Sussex. Aug 2020 killed by coyotes, Aug 2020
- "Gerdy" Ameraucana; killed by coyotes, fall 2019
- "Buffy" Buff Orpington: rooster, butchered
- Second batch 2020-03-13:
- "Gerdy II" Ameraucana. 2020-10 Died by prolapsed vent at 6 months old.
- "Rhodie" Rhode Island Red; Good egg layer, but wasn't getting along with the new flock, so gave her to a fellow chicken lover in Quemado, 2022-05-30.
- "Beemer" Buff Orpington. 2020-11 Her large combe became frostbitten (despite the heat in the coop), and the other chickens pecked at the wound and she died.
- "Harley" Buff Orpington. Aug 2020 killed by coyotes, same time as Henny Penny
- Third batch 2022-02-09: ordered from McMurray Hatchery Feb 7, 2022, 26 chicks + two freebies.
- Red Star (5) Really good egg layers. They look alike so we simply call them all "Rosie". Eggs are dark brown. 2025-03-10 One of the Red Stars died after a month of slow decline in vitality and energy.
- Ameraucana (5) Lays blue eggs, and each chicken has a completely different coloration and personality, which makes them easy to tell apart.
- "Laurel" Follows us around wanting to be picked up. If we don't pick her up, she jumps on us. Has large sideburns and quacks like a duck.
- "Frenchy" Growing up, she had fancy eyebrows that reminded me of a french dance hall girl. Good chicken but somewhat aloof.
- "Clover" Good chicken but an introvert who likes to do her own thing, which is fine with us. Haven't tried to catch her for months because we don't want to force ourselves on her. (All the others like to be held.)
- "Blueberry" is all gray with yellow feet, so doesn't look like an Ameraucana. Very sweet chicken.
- "Peewee" Had health issues right out of the box. Didn't eat or drink. I spent three days nursing her. The first night I held her in my hand all night, to keep her warm. Grew up to be a fine chicken, and still remembers my care. Likes to sleep in my lap with my hand covering her head, like old times. Lays good eggs and gets along with the others just fine. 2022-09-01, died of natural causes.
- Buff Rock (3) Small, medium, and large.
- "Buttercup" the small. She was just a few days old when Jenny accidentally set a water dish on top of her because she was under the strips of newspaper in the chick box. I found her a few minutes later, lying squished dead. I picked up the little body, and noticed a slight movement. So another three days of care. She's fine, but smaller than the others and sometimes has trouble figuring things out.
- "Rosemary" the medium, had an accident that resulted in a head injury. Was trampled by the others in the tunnel - just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Two days of care, during which she couldn't eat or drink - so I had to force feed her. Every time she pecked at food, her beak fell short. She couldn't judge the distance between her beak and the food. In time she got better, and is now doing just fine. She is a big fluffy girl but is noisy at times.
- "Violet" the large: Lays giant, double yoke eggs. Lays not every day, only about two times a week. Her eggs are so big they don't fit in the egg carton. 2023-11-10 got sick, the other chickens pecked on her comb, died.
- Silver Laced Wyandotte (Why-en-Dot) (2) These two look alike. Beautiful chickens and good egg layers. Eggs are pale brown.
- "Sylvia" 2023-03-06 killed by a hawk.
- "Lily" 2023-06-30 died of natural causes.
- Golden Wyandotte (2) "Daisy" and "Poppy" These two also look very much alike, with beautiful gold, tan and black feathers, and big, black fluffy butts. We can tell them apart by their characteristic combs. Good egg layers and very friendly. Eggs are light brown.
- Ginger Broiler St Run (8) Butchered at 10 weeks. Never again. We are strictly "no kill", from now on.
- And two Free "Surprise Chicks"
- "Stripey" my fav, but he turned out to be a rooster, so we gave him away (I like my peace and quiet) to our friend in Quemado 2022-05-15.
- "Homer" Black Japanese Bantam, beautiful but turned out to be a rooster, so we gave him away also 2022-05-15.
