Ray-Way Quilt Kits Photo

Our Ray-Way Quilt Kit comes in kit form that you sew yourself. The Quilt is used in camp (or at home) for sleeping beneath at night. It works like a sleeping bag, but is open underneath. You lie on your foam pad and drape the quilt over you like a blanket. But unlike a blanket, the quilt is contoured, so that it molds to the shape of your body. More info

Net-Tent Kit with Flap Closure  $82.45 is the easiest to sew, and the lightest in weight. Recommended for blocking flying insects such as mosquitoes, back flies and wasps. This version of the kit will make a one-person or a two-person Net-Tent. More Info

Click for a second Kit

Quadratic Kit $89.95  (Net-Tent with zipper closure) would be the most suitable for most people, because it keeps out the ground crawlers (ants and ticks) better than the flap version, and it is easier to sew than the Spitfire. It is a fraction heavier than the flap version, due to the weight of the zippers - but not much. And it takes a little more time to sew, again because of the zippers. But the design is very simple, with only four pieces of netting to sew together - like the flap version. More Info

Click for a second Kit

The Quadratic's floor is 81" long, same as the Spitfire, both 1P and 2P. If you are unsure about the length you need, place two cardboard boxes on the floor, 81" apart, and lie between them. If you need a longer floor, opt for a size Large (6" longer) or X-Large (12" longer).

Spitfire Kit $89.95 (Tapered Net-Tent with Zipper Closure) has a unique, streamlined shape that is tapered toward the foot in both the width and height. The intent is to save weight and pack space. It is made up of 10 pieces of netting, with a coated floor and a zipper closing entry. The seams add strength, making this style of net-tent more durable. And because of the weight savings, the Spitfire would likly be the most suitable for a summer-long hike. Ray used a Spitfire 1P on three hikes of the Appalachian Trail, and on his TransAm cycling trip. More Info

This video shows how easily the backpack kit goes together, and provides an understanding of the assembly methods. A netting bag for washing your Ray-Way gear. Designed to hold your Ray-Way backpack, but also works extremely well with a Net-Tent or other items such as stowbags and even socks and so forth. Simply load the bag, zip it closed, and toss it into the washing machine. The LaundryBag gets things twice as clean, as compared to just leaving them loose. This is because the more confined space causes a more vigorous agitation. Also, the bag keeps loose cords and straps confined so they don't tangle around the other items in the washing machine. The kit is easy to sew, and we highly recommend the LaundryBag for keeping your Ray-Way gear clean.  More Info

Spend an afternoon with Ray in the Maine woods, watching him explain the use of the camping gear that he carried during his third thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Run-time: 93 min. More Info

  • How Ray makes sure that he knows where everything is in the dark.
  • Packing the backpack the following morning, inside the Spitfire.
  • Taking down the Spitfire and stowing.
  • Taking down the tarp and stowing.
  • Ready to hike.

 $13.75

Note: This kit does not include the blue foam pad. The pad must be purchased separately from a department or sporting goods store.

With this kit you can make an ordinary blue foam pad foldable, so it will fit just right in your Ray-Way Backpack. Ray developed the idea for his 3rd A.T. thru-hike, and slept with it every night.

The finished kit should fit inside almost any pack, but it is designed for something a bit larger than our classic 2,200 cube pack; one that has more room for your other gear. On Ray's 3rd A.T. hike he carried a 2,600 and a 2,800 backpack. More Info

 $3.45
Comes without the foam knife or instructions. Intended to be ordered at the same time as the original Sleeping-Pad Kit.

We think everybody who camps with a Ray-Way Quilt should also have this Sleeping Hat. The Sleeping Hat is designed to cover the head, ears, face and mouth down to the base of the neck. This allows you to sleep warmly without covering your head and face with the quilt, and so avoid soaking the quilt with your moisture-laden breath. Your breath will dampen the front of the hat, but the hat is very quick drying. Our Kit comes with the fabric and complete sewing instructions.  More Info

The Thread-Pro is not included in any of our Ray-Way Kits.

But in retrospect, these folks wished they had bought several. We recommend keeping a few on hand. They are not too expensive, and make great gifts for your sewing friends.
