Our spandex Hiking Shorts come as a Kit that you sew yourself. And as a bonus, the kit comes with cut-out pieces. No patterns, no cutting of fabric. All you have to do is sew the pieces together.
These Shorts are very comfortable against the skin, and non-binding. They fit rather loosely (not skin-tight, not baggy) and because of the elasticity they are a dream to hike in.
The Kit comes with detailed instructions that walk you through the sewing construction, step by step.
You can hike in these shorts alone, and they also work very well under the Shell Pants.
Measure around the widest part of the hips (not the waist)

The Hiking Shorts (Kit) comes in five sizes (S, M, L, XL, 2XL), and feature an elastic waist band that can be adjusted to fit the waist more snugly or loosely.
The instructions tell you how to adjust the height of the waistband for a custom fit, during the construction of the shorts.
Please note that these sizes pertain to our Ray-Way Clothing Kits, and do not necessarily correlate to standard store-bought clothing.
For those hikers who's upper thighs rub against each other while hiking, these Hiking Shorts virtually eliminate the problem of chafe. The spandex fabric is smooth-textured, so it reduces the friction caused by the skin constantly rubbing with each step.
It doesn't seem to matter if the shorts are tight around the upper thighs, or loose. On a hot and humid day, when the skin becomes sweaty, the reduction of friction can be worth its weight in gold, for many hikers.
Note the black color of the shorts in the photo above. This is the signature color of the Ray-Way Hiking Shorts, and the only color we have right now.
We have been wearing our type of Hiking Shorts for a couple of decades. We make them from spandex, black in color. They look like cycling shorts, and in fact they also work great for cycling. When hiking, you can wear them alone, or under the Shell Pants.
The Spandex Shorts are easy to launder and quick drying. When distance hiking, typically I like to rinse out my hiking shorts every day or so. After rinsing, I wring them out, then put them back on, wet, and keep hiking. This might sound odd, until you have experienced for yourself how fast drying these shorts are.
