The Triple Crown
My dictionary defines the word “crown” as a mark of honor or completion; a culmination; bringing to a successful conclusion, as in “a crowning achievement.” I would like to coin the term “Triple Crown,” to commemorate hikes of the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail and the Appalachian Trail. And as President of ALDHA-West I will extend an honorary life membership to any hiker who completes the Triple Crown.

The Distance Hiker’s Gazette
November 1994
Saturday morning I described the ALDHA-West Triple Crown Award, and showed the plaques acknowledging those present who had hiked the PCT, the CDT, and the AT. As I wrote in a previous Gazette, my dictionary defines the word crown as a mark of honor or completion—a culmination, bringing to a successful conclusion, as in “a crowning achievement.” Thus, the Triple Crown is meant to honor the hiker who has walked all three of the nation’s ultra-long trails.
